COLLECTION OF 4 OBJECTS TO HELP US REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF PHONE USAGE. GRADUATION PROJECT FROM THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART

Rather than creating a new device or establishing a new behaviour to keep us away from the phone, existing objects were re-designed with a peculiar interaction: none of them has on/off buttons. Instead, they can only function whenever we connect our phone to them. Once our smart device is plugged in and the object is active, it can be used as long as there is no unawanted interaction with our phone (i.g. Instagram, messaging, etc.).

The four objects live in the domestic environment, and were created for the moments when smartphones are particularly distracting for us: a desk lamp for working, a speaker for leisure time, an alarm clock for the end of the day and a projector for enjoying a movie with someone.

The project is the final outcome of a year long research on concepts such as the emotional durability of our belongings, and the use of “animism” to design new technology and digital interactions.
