The Solitude of Creativity
2017
Originally inspired by the metropolitan life in London, this body of research began with a question: how can we address the dangerousness of loneliness through the use of creativity? Trying to find an answer from both a urban planning point of view, to a smaller object/product scale, the research took a step back into investigating how one’s creativity can be affected, whether positively or negatively, by the experience of loneliness.
During this process, a crucial step was a workshop run in Bologna (Italy) with 24 product designers. Structured in 3 activities, the workshop culminated in a prototyping phase, asking every participant to explore the location of the workshop and notice object of individual, even private, use. The participants were then asked to re-imagine their chosen object so that it couldn’t be used by less the two people simoultaneously. Their creations included a water bottle for two, a shared watering systems for kind neighbours and a heart-warming light switch.
The questions and final thoughts of this research, captured in a book format, became key attributes of Plot Generica’s inquisitive, research-based and collaborative approach.
